I found it to be a very interesting experience to switch from the traditional Kosher ingredients used in our kosher kitchen to Kosher Korean ingredients used in this recipe.
I have used crushed hot pepper flakes and cayenne pepper sprinkled over my pizza and other American foods, the Korean hot pepper has a distinct hot but sweet flavor with a hint of smokiness. As someone who has never used this spice, I found I was trying to guess the different flavors all combined into this one spice. Having grated pear thrown into the mix posed an additional challenge in this endeavor! Was it the pear that added the sweetness or the pepper?
